Armed police rush to Oxford Street after ‘man with a gun’ leads to outbreaks of looting

Armed police rushed down to Oxford Street last night after they were alerted to a man with a gun on the busy street.

Large crowds reportedly broke out in the area after the “gunman” was spotted on Saturday, (September 18), just before 9.30pm.

There were also reports of a group of youths attempting to break into and “loot”’ a sweet shop as chaos erupted.

A video posted to Twitter shows a large number of officers in the area and the street was closed off to shoppers.

The tweet said: “Reports of looting outside a sweet shop on Oxford street, multiple arrests, road closed off, over 50 police on the scene and police helicopter above.”

Police officers arrived swiftly at around 9.30pm but found no injuries and could not locate a man in possession of a firearm.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Police were called at 9.20pm on Saturday, September 18 following reports of a man with a firearm in Oxford Street.

“Specialist firearms officers deployed immediately and conducted an extensive area search.

“No suspects were located. There have been no reports of any injuries.
