A huge crowd flouted lockdown rules and were pictured outside the Senedd building in Cardiff Bay, with some revellers appearing to hold alcoholic drinks as they headed out into the sunshine for Good Friday celebrations.

Videos circulating on social media show people singing and dancing in unison to music while one Twitter user likened the scene to “an illegal rave”.

BBC Radio Five Live reporter Mark Hutchings said in a tweet that “police were keeping a low profile at the side of the Senedd” when he passed at 8pm, adding: “Hundreds of people gathered. Calm, if noisy, at the time, though no social distancing. I imagine there’ll been a bit to clear up in the morning.”

South Wales Police and Cardiff Council were forced to take action earlier this week following similar gatherings in the capital, reports Wales Online.

South Wales Police committed increased patrols to Cardiff Bay after crowds gathered in the area and left piles of litter in their wake.
