Two police officers have been taken to hospital after allegedly being assaulted at a shopping centre in West Bromwich.

New Square Shopping Centre confirmed arrests had been made following the dramatic episode at the retail complex, which reports suggest was a stabbing.

A witness said one of the male officers suffered a ‘bad injury to his neck’, BirminghamLive reports.

Two men, aged 41 and 37, and a 31-year-old woman, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after two officers were ‘slashed’.

Pictures from the scene show police surrounding what appears to be an officer receiving medical attention on the floor.

Remnants of a police officer’s uniform, including their vest and helmet, were left on the ground as police cordoned off the area.

Emergency services were called to the shopping centre at around 10am and an air ambulance reportedly landed nearby.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “Two police officers have received treatment from the ambulance service following an incident in West Bromwich this morning.

“West Midlands Ambulance Service received a 999 call from West Midlands Police at 11.42am to reports of two police officers who had been assaulted in New Square Shopping Centre, West Bromwich.

“An ambulance, two paramedic officers and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with medics on board attended the scene.”

The ambulance service added that the two male officers sustained ‘non-serious injuries’.

They were treated at the scene before being taken to hospital by ambulance for the further checks.
