Police officer investigated after boy, 11, suffered serious injuries when he was hit by police car

An investigation is underway after a boy was seriously injured in a collision involving a police officer’s car.

The incident occurred on May 25 at approximately 8:30 pm when the officer from Lancashire Constabulary was responding to an emergency call. At the time, the police car struck an 11-year-old boy who was crossing Owen Road in Lancaster.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has taken charge of the investigation. According to a spokesman from the IOPC, the child sustained serious injuries and was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. Fortunately, the child’s condition has shown steady improvement since the accident.

The IOPC has already visited the scene of the collision and gathered crucial evidence, including CCTV footage, body-worn camera recordings, and statements from witnesses.

Based on their assessment of the available information, the IOPC has informed the police driver that they are under a criminal investigation for potential offenses related to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. In addition, the officer has been served with a notice indicating that they are also being investigated for potential gross misconduct concerning the manner of their driving.
